Fulacht fia in Keelhilla

On level rough grazing and bare rock pavement c. 15m E of a cliff (H 4m) from the base of which two springs emerge to feed a small stream which flows past the SW and S limits of the site. The site is clear of overgrowth, but it is surrounded by dense hazel and thorn. Listed as ‘Earthwork’ in the SMR (1992) and the RMP (1996). Hachured on the 1840 and 1915 eds. of the OS 6-inch maps. A well-preserved, horseshoe-shaped, grass-covered, burnt mound (external dims. 20.5m N–S; 12.3m E–W; H 1–1.6m) open to the W and with a central trough area (5.8m N–S; 5m E–W). The composition of the mound is visible at SW where livestock have eroded the sod cover and a relatively modern wall of large blocks and boulders surrounds the site.
