Fulacht fia in Glencolumbkille South

Fulacht fia

What is recorded here

Fulacht fia in Glencolumbkille South is a low, elongated mound of burnt stone and ash, partly visible beneath moss, ferns and overgrown branches in wet pasture where streams run south and northeast. It lies among at least two other fulachta fia and a holy well, suggesting a place where heat, water and repetition mattered. People may have gathered there to cook, clean, mark time or make offerings, while the land kept the shape of their labour.
In low-lying wet pasture, with streams flowing to the S and NE. This fulacht fia comprises an elongated horseshoe-shaped mound (10m NNW-SSE; max. 8m ENE-WSW; H 0.7-1.2m) of partly exposed burnt stone and ash, overgrown by trees, briars, moss and ferns. There are two other fulachta fia nearby, one (CL010-037003-) c. 2m to the E, and another (CL010-037002-) c. 14m to the N. There is a holy well (CL010-038001-) c. 53m to the N.
