Fulacht fia in Behagullane

Fulacht fia

What is recorded here

Mistress Ruwena dropped a copper coin into the green well each midnight, believing the water drank human memory. The conifer fell during a violent storm, dragging her bronze mirror and a child’s red cloak from the mud. The woman vanished before dawn, leaving behind only a copper coin stuck in the well wall and a faint scent of burnt pine in the clean air.
Depicted and named as a ‘well’ on the 25’’ OS map. Near the bottom of a gentle, north-facing slope, on the south side of a small public road. Extending into the garden and animal paddock associated with a dwelling house. The partial remains of a fulacht fiadh were revealed when a large conifer tree was blown over and a semicircle of heat shattered stone and charcoal rich soil was visible. The exposed part of the fulacht fiadh measures c.6m east-west and c. 2m north-south, while any further remains are hidden under bushes and the collapsed tree to the south. There is a standing stone (CO084-081) c. 30m to the east.
