This black commemorative plaque records: Friends Meeting House - Oakham. Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) have been meeting together for worship in Rutland since 1671. Robert Hawley gave the land for the construction of this Meeting House in 1719. William Tompson left property at Somerby to the society and funds from this legacy helped to pay the £166 building costs.

Robert Hawley was a significant Quaker benefactor who donated the land for the construction of the Friends Meeting House in Oakham in 1719, contributing crucially to the establishment of a permanent place of worship for Quakers in Rutland.
