Frederic William Burton

Burton arrived in Corofin at six, old enough to remember another childhood and young enough to be remade by the Atlantic. Clifden House gave him room, roof and distance from the capital; the sea gave him the danger and light that later appeared in his watercolours. He may have watched Aran ships disappear over the horizon before he ever painted a drowned child, carrying that loss into every gallery he later guarded.
