Thirty-seven Castle Street in Fraserburgh still stands as a nineteenth-century terraced house, though it may have begun life as a herring curing station where salt and smoke changed the air itself. The building belongs to the age when the herring fleet made Aberdeenshire rich and the streets smelled of brine. Whether families lived above the curing decks or workers stood knee-deep in barrels remains unclear, but the structure still holds the shape of that busy maritime world.
