Fotheringhay Castle stands as a ruined motte-and-bailey in North Northamptonshire, England, where King Richard III was born in 1452 and Mary, Queen of Scots, was executed in 1587. Simon de Senlis probably founded the castle around 1100 on the northern side of the River Nene, but human hands removed most of its masonry during the 1630s. The earthworks remain visible across the water, holding the shape of a building that no longer exists.
