Forteviot is a small Strathearn village where a royal palace once stood before King Cináed mac Ailpín died there in 858. The present village was rebuilt in the 1920s by John Alexander Dewar, 1st Baron Forteviot, as a model village influenced by the Garden City movement. Its parish church, village hall and main square still give the place a deliberately composed look, as if modern convenience had been arranged around an older royal memory.
Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Forteviot as Palace (medieval), Palace (early Medieval)(possible). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 100m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
Forteviot was a royal residence associated with the early medieval kings of the Picts and later the Kingdom of Alba, likely held from the 6th to the 11th century. It is important as a key site in Scottish royal history and is traditionally linked to the legendary King Kenneth MacAlpin.
