Linked to St. Fethart, an early Christian saint associated with the Pictish kingdom of Fortriu, the site is traditionally connected to healing rituals and is believed to have been an important religious center during the early medieval period. Local tradition suggests that the saint was a royal chaplain and that the area was a place of pilgrimage.
