Fort Redoubt is a Palmerston fort completed in 1856 to defend Freshwater Bay, where a deep dry ditch and seven gun emplacements watched for enemy landings. On June 25, 1901, a breech block blew out during training, killing four soldiers and injuring six others before the fort left military use in 1928. The place is now a private residence, yet the bay still reflects the sudden violence and wasted youth of that lost gunnery exercise.
