Fort Popton is a Palmerston fort completed in 1864 to defend Milford Haven, its tapering hexagonal ramparts and pentagonal bastions still shaping the Pembrokeshire coast. Built between 1859 and 1864 for £76,000, it carried eleven heavy rifled guns in casemates and ten more in open emplacements, with barracks large enough for 158 other ranks. Abandoned at the start of the 20th century, it served again in the Second World War, then passed to BP in 1957 as an oil terminal before becoming part of Valero's Angle Bay Refinery.
