Fort Gomer

Fort

What is recorded here

Fort Gomer was the first and southernmost polygonal fort built for the Gosport Advanced Line between 1853 and 1858. Its broad V-shaped barracks, wet moat and twin corner bastionettes created a killing box where muskets and heavy guns overlapped across the ditch. The fort stood for nearly a century before disappearing, leaving only lane names and memory behind a modern Gosport street.
Fort Gomer is shown as a fort on the public map of Gosport. The saved point is the map point or the centre of its mapped shape.
