Fort Bridgewoods was a hexagonal fortress built in 1884 to protect the Chatham Ring, yet bulldozers erased most of its chambers and filled its ditch after it became redundant in 1968. Only two concrete abutments still protrude from the ground behind Rochester Airport, marking the place where Home Guard soldiers once watched the sky and civil defence workers waited for a nuclear strike. The missing walls suggest a brutal forgetting, stripping the fort of its shape while leaving behind a ghost that can no longer be seen.
