Castle Bridge in Forres carries travellers across moving water, while the Victoria Hotel stands ready beside it. The town has used this narrow gap for centuries because it is the clearest crossing available. A tired rider might have drunk water, fed a horse and continued north without knowing the bridge was famous.

Forres Castle, later known as Castle Bridge and part of the Victoria Hotel, was originally built by the Earls of Moray in the 13th century, with significant medieval remains still visible. It is historically important as a key stronghold in the struggle for control of northern Scotland during the Wars of Scottish Independence.
