Castle Street in Forfar still carries the shape of a 19th century hotel, the kind of place where tired travellers stopped to eat, sleep and overhear other people's business. Rooms may have smelt of wet wool and candle smoke, while carts waited outside and voices clashed through thin walls. The building no longer needs to be grand; it only needs to remember that people once paid to be somewhere warm when Angus darkness closed in.
