Thirty-five to thirty-nine Castle Street in Forfar divided working life and home life without a break. Shop fronts faced the street while tenement rooms stacked above them, forcing neighbours to share stairwell noise and kitchen smells. That closeness suited a small burgh where distance wasted energy and pride. People still walk past the building, unaware they are passing the exact address where two different lives were crammed into one stone frame.
