Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Forfar, Old Market Cross as Market Cross (17th Century). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
Forfar's Old Market Cross is associated with St Fillan, a 7th-century Irish monk and healer, and was historically a site for both trade and religious observance. Local tradition holds that St Fillan founded a church in the area, and his name is linked to several holy wells and healing sites in Angus.
