Linked to St Fillan, an 8th-century Irish monk and healer, the site is associated with traditions of pilgrimage and water cures. St Fillan is said to have founded a monastery at Tullyfillan near Forfar, and holy wells connected to his name were often believed to offer healing for ailments such as skin diseases and lameness.
