What is recorded here

Half a metre of grey stone stands upright in a roadside fence, its shallow circular hollow worn smooth by generations of hands. Locals call it the wart well, believing water drawn from that small basin could pull skin flaws into the earth. The font may have traveled from Kilkerranmore Church, carrying church purity into rural practice. People still pause beside it, not to judge authenticity but to remember that ordinary stone can hold unusual faith.
Rectangular stone (H 0.4m; 0.28m x 0.27m) with circular hollow (diam. 0.25m; D 0.12m), in roadside field fence ; said to have come from nearby Kilkerranmore Church (CO135-085003-). Known locally as "the wart well". The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
