Fonmon Castle is a rare surviving medieval structure in the Vale of Glamorgan because it was remodelled in the 18th century without being Gothicized. Thick twelfth-century walls still mark the small rectangular keep, while later additions spread across the site. The St John family lived there from Norman times until 1656, when Colonel Philip Jones bought it and improved the rooms. That continuity makes the castle feel less like a ruined monument and more like a house that kept changing for the people inside it.
