According to Went (1946, 148), in 1769 Thomas, fourth Viscount Kenmare mentioned in his estate books that on his property at Donemark, a short distance north of Bantry town, there were 'large palaces or receptacles for carrying on a fishery on it which the tenant's father carried on while the pilchard remained on the coast.'
