Finola O'Donnell

Place of death

What is recorded here

Finola O'Donnell died at Donegal Friary, the ruined cloister she helped found beside the River Eske in 1474. She travelled a hundred miles to Galway with other women, demanding Franciscans join her in Tyrconnell rather than leave them without teaching. They built the abbey at the wharf, and it stood through war and siege as a place of learning, prayer and memory for the O'Donnell name.
