Fillingham Castle rose on a limestone ridge around 1760, forcing the surrounding land into a Gothic dream of pointed gates and shadowed avenues. Sir Christopher Wray commissioned the strange structure, possibly through John Carr of York, creating a private kingdom where even the distant church wore medieval spikes. The estate swallowed ordinary function beneath spectacle, building an icehouse and pheasantry to serve its theatrical hunger. What began as noble vanity became a registered landscape, preserving the exact moment human arrogance shaped the earth into a story about itself.
