Fanore More holds a long forgotten field system where low stone walls disappear under briars beside a cliff overlooking the Caher River. The ledge stretches about 150 metres, preserving rooms, hut sites and a cave whose entrance a wall now blocks. A large boulder sits at the centre like a table left behind when the users departed. It is not certain whether prehistoric herders, medieval tenants or both shaped the walls, but the arrangement still reads as a place where people lived, kept things and watched the river below.

Situated in rough pasture on a ledge (Wth 60m) at the foot of a NW-facing cliff (H 7–8m) overlooking the Caher River and Fanore dunes. A field system of possibly prehistoric or medieval date defined by low often collapsed sections of stone walling which are overgrown with thorn and briars. The field system covers an area c. 150m NNE-SSW by 50m ESE-WNW and comprises three sections of walls running parallel to the cliff-face and two perpendicular walls extending W from those. Two short lengths extend W from the cliff-face in the SE portion of the complex. A natural cave in the cliff-face midway along the complex may have been part of the complex but there is currently no evidence to specifically date its use. Its entrance is partially blocked by a wall. An enclosure (CL001-013001-), two hut sites (CL001-013002- and CL001-013003-) and two house sites (CL001-013004- and CL001-013005-) lie within the field system. A large boulder (L 2.3m; Wth 1.9m; H 1.6m) lying on bare rock provides a focus in the centre of the complex. It does not have supporting stones but covers a clay and stone-filled gryke. A smaller boulder propped against its E end appears to have originally formed part of the main boulder. A cairnfield comprising very small piles of stone laid on low outcropping rock lies to the N and may be of more recent date. Compiled by: Mary Tunney Date of upload: 21 September 2020
