Overview

Field system in Abbey (tiaquin By.) is recorded as Field system at Abbey (tiaquin By.). It preserves evidence of a surviving pattern of fields, banks or boundaries made by repeated farming. The source record also describes the surviving evidence; its details are kept below.

Who lived here and when

The record identifies Field system in Abbey (tiaquin By.) as Field system. It does not safely name every person, family or worker who used it, or fix all phases to exact years.

Homes and daily life

The recorded type points to a surviving pattern of fields, banks or boundaries made by repeated farming. That explains the likely everyday purpose without claiming people, tools or customs that the exact record does not prove.

What was found

The saved source says: To W and N of Knockmoy Abbey (GA058-004001-). It consists of a series of fields covering an area c. 550m NW-SE by c. 400m NE-SW. Defined by low grassed-over collapsed stone walls, some of the fields are rectilinear in plan and traces of cultivation are visible. (Topgr. Files, OPW; ASGAP 28:64-9) The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010 This monument is subject to a preservation order made under the National Monuments Acts 1930 to 2014 (PO no. 4/1989).

Why it ended

The saved record does not establish one certain ending. A change in farming, water level, trade, fuel, ownership, route or settlement pattern may have ended the use, but no single cause is claimed without evidence.

Why it mattered

Field system in Abbey (tiaquin By.) fixes a real piece of work or daily life to an exact place. Even where names are lost, its remains show how people obtained food and materials, organised land, made homes or adapted to the local ground.
