Field boundary in Killelan West

Field boundary

What is recorded here

In rough grazing on the lower S-facing slopes of Killelane Mountain with views across Dolus Bay to Valencia Island. A c. 30m long E-W drystone wall (T 0.9m; H 1.2m), built mainly with horizontal slabs, skirts the N side of a hut site (KE079-008----). A similarly built curvilinear wall (T 0.7m; H 1m) extends S from the hut site for c. 25m. The lower courses of this wall appear to be contemporaneous with the hut site, but the upper horizontal courses appear to be the result of rebuilding as a field boundary. (O'Sullivan and Sheehan 1996, 407, no. 1316). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Kerry. Volume I: South-West Kerry' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 30 May 2011
