Marian and her children watched the ship leave Fetteresso, certain it would never return. They stood in the dovecote with eggs in their hands, waiting for a pigeon to carry a line back to life. The castle doors remained closed, but the small flight of birds turned the estate into a bridge between the living and the drowned.
