Fetteresso Castle was the ancient seat of the Keiths, Earls Marischal of Scotland, rising as a tower house before becoming a sprawling country mansion. Montrose burnt the east portion in 1645, forcing a rebuild that preserved the Earl Marischal arms on a lintel dated 1671. After Admiral Robert Duff purchased it in 1782 and later rebuilt it in 1808, the castle served as a guest house before falling roofless in 1954. It stood abandoned until 1993, when restorers transformed the ruined shell into flats, saving its turreted silhouette from permanent loss.

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Fetteresso Castle as Country House (19th Century), Tower House (16th Century). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
