Ferniehirst Castle is an L-shaped stone keep on the Jed Water that Clan Kerr built around 1470 and defended with picks, mattocks and gunfire during the Rough Wooing. It later hosted Mary Queen of Scots’s exiled circle, resisted James VI, and stood empty before becoming a youth hostel. Peter Kerr, 12th Marquess of Lothian, restored it in 1988, returning it to a private home where the old border wars still seem to breathe through its chambers.
