Faslane Castle stood as a possible medieval motte overlooking the Gareloch, serving the mormaers of Lennox until it vanished into a green mound between two steep glens. The ruined walls may have sheltered the last MacAulay chief of Ardincaple in the mid-eighteenth century, providing a final roof for a fading bloodline before the sea and time erased the rest. Today the naval base dominates the horizon, leaving only a small mound to mark where a powerful family once watched the water.

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Faslane Castle as Castle (medieval), Motte (medieval)(possible). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 10m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
