Fairy fort / stone ringfort in Tuam

Fairy fort / stone ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort in Tuam, County Cavan: a raised oval ringfort on the shore of Lough MacNean Upper, its drystone wall largely collapsed and entrance lost. Inside, trees and scrub have grown over the ancient ground, turning a human stronghold into a green chamber where the lake wind still moves through branches.
Situated on the shore of Lough MacNean Upper. Raised oval area (int. dims. 41.6m N-S; 31.4m E-W) enclosed by a substantial although largely collapsed drystone wall which has been denuded at SW, N and SE. Original entrance not recognisable. Internal area has been planted with trees and supports scrub. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cavan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1995). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 22 December 2008
