Magic and life both claim the same rock. An oval cashel on Scanlan’s Island keeps its shape beneath grass, with outer facing stones still visible at the west and a rectangular house set in its south-west quadrant. The sea withdraws to reveal a path from the mainland, then returns to make the island a separate place. What the fort excluded, included or awaited is no longer written in stone, but the shape still answers the tide and the memory of hands that arranged it.

On a gentle SE-facing downslope on good meadowland on the E landward side of a tidal island named Scanlan’s Island. A sheltered location, accessible at low tide from mainland to NE. Listed as ‘Enclosure’ in the RMP (1996). A poorly preserved oval cashel (int. dims. 50.3m NW–SE from crest of spread at NW to top of scarp at SE; 34.5m ENE–WSW crest to crest), defined by a low grassed-over stony spread with outer facing-stones visible at WSW. A modern field wall, not on the 1915 OS 6-inch map extends NW-SE along the bank. A rectangular house (CL002-019002-) of indeterminate date is located in the SW quadrant.
