Fairy fort / stone ringfort in Carrigshane

Fairy fort / stone ringfort

What is recorded here

No visible trace remained in 1991 because quarries cut through Carrigshane and erased the stone ringfort. The loss is not mysterious; human hands took the stones and rearranged the land. What is missing is no longer hidden, only taken.
Recorded as 'ruined cathair' (UCC). Area now extensively quarried and there was no visible trace of the monument when inspected in 1991. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009

This remains an important historical record, but the official description says the monument is no longer visible or has been destroyed. The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
