Fairy fort / stone ringfort in Cahernalough

Fairy fort / stone ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are no fairy tale, but human settlements misread through centuries of fear and wonder. Cahernalough is one such place: a stone ring on a Clare ridge, partly buried under grass, scrub and later field walls. What looks like a fairy fort may have been a home, a shelter or a boundary marker, its shape preserved only because people stopped using it and the land closed over the edges.
Just SW of the summit of a NE-SW ridge. Subcircular grass-covered area (int. diam. 27m N-S; 24m E-W) defined by a scrub-covered stone spread (Wth 2.8-5.8m; int. H 0.3-0.9m; ext. H 0.6-0.7m) with the original outer facing (H 0.2m) surviving NE-E. A field wall overlies the outer edge N-E and some spoil is added to the perimeter. There is no visible entrance, although it may have been at NNE or SSW where the perimeter is slightest. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 11 April 2016
