Fairy fort / stone ringfort in An Bóthar Breac

Internal diam. 18.5m N-S, 20m E-W This site is located at the W end of the vast expanse of moorland that lies on the N side of the valley of the Owenalondrig river, between the enclosed agricultural land to S and the central mountain ridge to N. Though unnoted on the 1st edition of the OS map and marked only as a sheep-fold on the 2nd edition, the site consists of a circular clochaun contained within a roughly circular, stone-walled enclosure, possibly a cashel. The entrance to the latter faces SE and consists of a passage, 1.5m wide and 3 to 4m long, which is defined on either side by upright slabs. The clochaun wall is 1.5m thick and .75m high and the interior is 3.5m in diameter. The entrance faces E. The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, ‘Corca Dhuibhne.
