Fairy fort / ringfort in Moor (clare By.)

Fairy fort / ringfort

What is recorded here

Moor holds a broken ring forty-nine metres wide, its earth bank overgrown and its scarp degraded beneath level grass. Field walls cut through the NE and SE, reducing the fort to a faint suggestion rather than a clear boundary. The name fairy fort admits the limit of human knowledge: the shape resists explanation, and the land keeps its own counsel.
In level grassland. Poorly preserved subcircular rath (N-S c. 49m) defined by an overgrown bank of earth and stone from SW through N to E, and elsewhere by a degraded scarp. Possible external fosse visible from N to NE. Field walls cut the monument at NE and SE. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
