Fairy fort / ringfort in Knockroe (fassadinin By.)

Fairy fort / ringfort

What is recorded here

Knockroe in County Kilkenny contains a hidden rath in the middle of its townland, eluding both the 1839 survey and later mapping. The fortress vanished from human records while keeping its shape beneath grass or memory. People may have walked past its gate without knowing they entered a chamber where forgotten time still turns.
According to O'Kelly (1969, 30) in Knockroe there is, 'a rath in the middle of the townland'. There is no ringfort indicated on the 1st (1839) OS 6-inch map or on the 1947 revision. The located of the 'rath' is unknown within the townland. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 14 January 2019
