Fairy fort / ringfort in Killuney

Fairy fort / ringfort

What is recorded here

Killuney hides a vanished fort beneath ordinary pasture, local memory claiming a tunnel inside the mound. The earth keeps that much of the shape even though the grass has swallowed every stone and edge. A ringfort becomes a fairy fort when people stop seeing walls and start believing the ground is breathing.
On NW slopes of a low hill in pastureland. According to local tradition, this is the site of a 'fort' which contained a 'tunnel' (possible Man-made underground passage). No visible surface trace survives. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
