Fairy fort / ringfort in Kilcrimple

Fairy fort / ringfort

What is recorded here

Kilcrimple is a ghost village. The fort is gone, the field unbroken, and the chamber empty. What is lost is not death but the end of witness. The woman who saw it is gone. The man who mapped it is gone. The camera that took its last picture is gone. Only the hole remains, a round absence in the earth. That is why the place is sacred. It is not a monument to what was built. It is a monument to what forgetting does. The field has not preserved the fort. The field has digested it.
On a rise in grassland, c. 270m to the E of Ballyturin Lough. Marked on the 1838 edition of the OS 6-inch map as a circular enclosure (diam. c. 30m). On inspection in May 1986 no visible surface trace survived. However, its outline is faintly visible on the OSi digitalglobe aerial imagery (Google 2019). Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 26 July 2019
