Fairy fort / ringfort in Flaskagh More

Fairy fort / ringfort

What is recorded here

Flaskagh More, County Galway: A circular enclosure about thirty metres wide, drawn on the first Ordnance Survey map but no longer visible in the low grassland north of the river. It may have been a home, a boundary marker or a fairy fort in local thought. The earth has taken back its shape, leaving only the memory of a circle where people once drew a line between their world and the wilder one.
In low-lying grassland to N of the Flaskagh More River. Marked on 1st ed. of OS 6-inch map as a circular enclosure (D c. 30m). No visible surface trace survives. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
