Fairy fort / ringfort in Cnoc Tua Mór

Fairy fort / ringfort

What is recorded here

Cnoc Tua Mór is a ruined ringfort in County Galway, Ireland. Its earth and stone bank still marks a wide circle on a slight grassy rise, though a field wall now crosses part of the edge. The gap at the south-east may have been the old entrance, the kind of place where people entered, looked back, and carried the shape of the fort inside them.
On a slight rise in grassland. Poorly preserved circular ringfort (D 36m) defined by a bank of earth and stone. A gap at SE, though modern, may have given original access. A field wall overlies the monument from S to SW. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
