Fairy fort / ringfort in Cabra Glebe

Fairy fort / ringfort

What is recorded here

Cabara Glebe in County Donegal contained a ringfort similar in size and nature to a nearby documented example, but trees have since obliterated the visible fort. The first edition Ordnance Survey map still marked the lost fort, preserving a shape that human hands or fairy mischief may have built. Forgetting is not the same as losing; the glebe keeps both the marker and the creature it concealed.
The 'Fort' shown on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map is now virtually obliterated by tree planting. It appears to have been similar in size and nature to the nearby ringfort (DG052-016-). The above description was derived from the 'Archaeological Survey of County Donegal. A description of the field antiquities of the County from the Mesolithic Period to the 17th century.' Compiled by: Brian Lacey with Eamon Cody, Claire Cotter, Judy Cuppage, Noel Dunne, Vincent Hurley, Celie O'Rahilly, Paul Walsh and Seán Ó Nualláin (Lifford: Donegal County Council, 1983). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated. Date of upload: 22 September 2008
