What is recorded here
Fairy forts in County Cork are small earthen rings that may have been built or shaped by human hands before becoming sacred or dangerous in local memory. Tooreenbane has one such ring on forgotten farmland, now hidden or levelled rather than displayed. It is the kind of place where ordinary land keeps an unusual shape, and people may have lived, feared or wondered around it for generations.
According to Broker (1937, 50), on Timothy Riordan's land is fort '25 yards in diameter levelled'. Exact location not known; Riordan's farmhouse now deserted. Second ringfort (8605) on farm.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
