Magic is not necessary to explain a ringfort, but people often use wonder when they refuse to face the facts. A chambered castle built for a local lord becomes a fairy fort only after human history stops being visible. The real mystery is not whether fairies live there. It is whether modern people still believe magic when they would rather ignore the evidence.
