Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Sunfort

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Mortons has forgotten the fort, but the land has not. A shallow ditch and a low bank still mark a circular chamber thirty metres wide, hidden beneath hawthorn and grass on a warm south-east slope. People may have lived there before memory, or the fort may have belonged to the fairies, whose names often enter Irish landscape when human history fades. Either way, the ground kept a shape unusual enough to resist the plough and the pasture. Forgetting it is the strange part.
In pasture, on gentle SSE-facing slope. Circular area (33.8m E-W; 33.5m N-S) enclosed by slight rise (max. H 0.3m); shallow fosse (max. D 0.3m). Bank and interior overgrown with hawthorn bushes. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
