Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Rooghan

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Rooghan is a fairy fort or earthen ringfort in Rooghan, County Sligo, Ireland. It occupies a level area below a ridge summit inside a young coniferous plantation. A twenty-nine metre circular platform sits within a three and a half metre wide earthen bank that has a three metre eastern entrance blocked by stones and a two metre northeastern gap. Darker vegetation surrounds the bank, marking a possible silted fosse that a field boundary cuts at the northwest.
In a young coniferous plantation, on a level area just below the summit of a ridge. A raised circular area (diam. 29m) enclosed by an earthen bank and a possible external fosse. The bank (Wth 3.5m; int. H 0.8m; ext. H 1m) is generally low internally. The entrance (Wth 3m) is at E, infilled with stones. There is a gap (Wth 2m) in the bank at NE. A band of darker vegetation (Wth 3m) surrounding the bank probably indicates a silted-up external fosse. A field boundary truncates the line of the fosse at NW. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005). Date of upload: 18 January 2008
