Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Radrinagh

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Mangerton Mountain watches the south-facing slope where two earthen banks and a flat-bottomed fosse enclose a circular pasture. The inner bank rises three metres along its northern arc, topped by trees that mark the best-preserved part of the ring. A possible hut site lies at the centre, now hidden beneath grass and forgotten use. The fort is not a fairy tale, though its shape and age tempt people to believe one.
In pasture, on a S-facing slope with views SW to Mangerton Mountain. A circular area (43.8m E-W; 43.1m N-S) defined by two earthen banks and an intervening fosse. The inner bank (Wth 6.3m; int. H 0.9m; ext. H 3.05m) is flat-topped and best preserved along the N arc where it is topped with trees. The fosse (Wth 2.7m) is flat-bottomed. The outer bank (Wth 3.7m; int. H 1.65m; ext. H 0.55m) is also flat-topped. Breaks in the banks occur at N, S and SW. The interior slopes down to the S and has a possible hut site (KE067-005001-) at the centre. The rath is partially obscured by overgrowth. Compiled by: Elizabeth Byrne, Ursula Egan and Sheila Ronan, Archaeological Survey Unit, University College, Cork. Date of upload: 31 January 2011
