Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Newtown (st. Mullin's Lower By.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are not for humans. They belong to the hidden people who still own the land beneath our feet. To mark them is to enslave them. To destroy them is to invite their wrath. Leave them alone.
The following description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Carlow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Approximately oval area (59.8m NE-SW, 52.9m NW-SE) now enclosed by stone-faced earthen bank (H 1.2m; Wth 2-2.3m) similar to field boundaries. Modified and incorporated into present field system. Site possibly indicated by approximately circular area defined by very spread-out rise/bank (diam. 40m). Laneway formerly skirted inside of present bank from S to W. Aerial photograph (GB89.S.14) shows well preserved ringfort (Barrett 1989).

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
