Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Meanus

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

No visible gap, no stone marker, no straight line to throw against it. The fort is a rounded earth chamber set inside a water-filled ditch, large enough to hold a whole neighbourhood and mysterious enough to refuse description. Meanus gives it life, not history.
Monument described by O'Kelly (1942-3, 235) as following; 'This consists of a circular earthen platform surrounded by a water-logged fosse. The height of the platform over the fosse bottom is 7' [2.1m] and the overall diameter is 160' [48.7m]. The entrance is not recognisable. The south side of the fosse is heavily overgrown. It is situated in good low-land'. Compiled by: Caimin O'Brien Date of upload: 01 August 2019
