Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Lisbree

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Two deep ditches and heavy earth banks still circle a thirty-five metre platform in Lisbree, marking a defended home where people once lived, bred animals and faced danger. The southern entrance remains visible through matching gaps and a causeway, inviting imagination about children running across it or strangers kept outside. Local names call it a fairy fort, not as joke but as a warning that the place belongs to more than human memory.
Raised circular area (int. diam. 35.6m) enclosed by two substantial earthen banks with outer fosses. A low counterscarp bank surrounds the external fosse from SE-W-N. Corresponding breaks in banks with accompanying causeway at SW represents original entrance. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cavan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1995). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 22 December 2008
